Presidents Message
What is Rotary all about?  Rotary recognises that family comes first, business comes second and hopefully Rotary is third.  Amongst members, comradeship is very high on the list of priorities.  Yes, there is no doubt that we are Rotarians to “do good in the world” and to support each other while doing so.  The vision of Upper Blue Mountains Sunrise (UBMS) is to help create a world where men and women unite and act to create lasting and positive changes - across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves – in other words, belonging to Rotary is a team sport; we do not and cannot achieve our goals by ourselves.
There are some goals we cannot achieve as a single Rotary club of UBMS and need to join with other clubs in the Blue Mountains.  A recent effort of joining together saw a mountain wide Australia Day celebration from Blackheath, Katoomba, Lawson, Springwood to Glenbrook which we are being encouraged to repeat each year; in April we had a team effort to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rotary in Australia on the 21st April with a hike from Mount Victoria to Glenbrook carrying an “R100” replica torch and highlighting all the contributions that Rotary Clubs in the mountains have done for the local communities.   There are issues like suicide and homelessness which are also widespread and need a joint effort to achieve desired results.
Rotary Clubs have been operating in the mountains for between 20 and 76 years and of course have developed their own histories and “cultures” – we all still have the same vision to do good in the world while enjoying the comradery.  So, if you are contemplating joining a Rotary Club, visit each one and see how you feel, because at the end of the day, we are all pulling in the same direction.

_______________________________________________

Finally, as most of you know Dawn and I are moving from the Mountains to Noosa. We leave next month with fond memories of our Rotary Club, our friends and our time in the Blue Mountains. Bill Pixton will takeover as President, albeit two months earlier than planned. We will be back for Changeover and hope to see many of you at Parklands, Blackheath on 6th June.
Irene's Cookbook

Our Club, currently celebrating our 20th year, and in recognition of the wonderful work carried out by the late Irene Reid, will be publishing Irene's Cookbook this year. It will make a great Christmas gift with all net proceeds going to an appropriate charity.

In the early period of the Club, Irene's cooking and catering skills, contributed immensely to our fundraising efforts. With Bob Reid's support and under the leadership of Jenny Hartnett and the input of many team members who were close to Irene, we are assembling and testing Irene's recipes and developing the first draft. We will add other recipes to the mix and publish a professional and moving story about Irene's rich life.

Last weekend we had over thirty members bring along a meal based on one of Irene's hand-crafted recipes. They were all carefully photographed by Michael Small before being enthusiastically devoured by the crowd. In a word...delicious!

We will keep everyone updated over the next few months.

R100 Baton Relay

The R100 Baton Relay was an event that has just finished across both Australia and New Zealand to celebrate 100 years of Rotary in our respective countries.
Each district that participated brought local colour and culture to the celebration. Our starting point was at the highest point of Mt. Victoria with all five BM Clubs participating plus the e-club.  In addition, we had the very generous support of the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus Company which adorned one of their double decker tourist buses with a Rotary logo and signage covering the length of the bus.
The event began at 7:00am on Thursday, April 22 with a group of intrepid walkers negotiating the tracks and back streets down the mountain with brief stops at Blackheath, Medlow Bath for morning tea, and then onto lunch at The Carrington Hotel.  Afternoon tea and yummie tucker was taken at Wentworth Falls Lake (courtesy of Love Bites) accompanied by a glass or two of champers.
On Saturday, April 23, Jennifer Scott (a very experienced walker) and four others covered the 30 kms to Buttenshaw Park in Springwood before afternoon tea. After tea, the group met up with other Club members from Springwood and Lower Blue with an end goal of Glenbrook.
We wish to thank all who have contributed and/or participated in so many ways towards this event.
MYST

Gailene Keen, the new Fundraising Manager at MYST attended our meeting in April to give the Club and update on their ongoing work in the local community with at-risk young people.
MYST provides a wide range of services, programs and activities aimed that supports the development of the most disadvantaged and at-risk young people in the community by providing relevant, dynamic, and engaging programs that empower young people to grow emotionally, physically and intellectually so they build resilience and self-belief and can overcome life’s challenges and adversity get back on track and grow up with prospects not problems.
There has been a that has happened  last 12-18 months which has changed the daily lives of young people in the Blue Mountains community which has greatly impacted MYST and put pressure on our staff and the way we work.
The impact of natural disasters such as bushfires and floods on top COVID -19 has meant that they need vital emotional and mental health support now more than ever – and it is anticipated that the impact of these will be felt for up to 5 years. The need for our services is acute and growing each day - young people are presenting with more complex needs which require a higher level of support to ensure that they can get backtrack.
MYST is currently raising funds to roll out youth mental health first aid programs to approximately 400 year 10 students in all four high schools across the Blue Mountains.
Gailene told the meeting: “MYST has invested in training two of our youth workers to deliver the program. We are hoping we can start with programs at Katoomba and Blaxland High within the next few months. The program will cost about $60 per student to deliver and our aim is that by building resilience and providing young people with the skills they need help and support one and another that this will help reduce youth suicide in the area and also alleviate the pressure on youth mental health services such as MYST to provide crisis support.
Beyond this program there is still more that needs to be done, which is why MYST also needs to raise funds and awareness to ensure that they can build capacity to help more at-risk youth.

Gailene said  “Thank you so much for your past support of MYST. I hope we can continue to work together to support young people in the local area to overcome adversity and ensure that they thrive.”
Vale Ken Devine

We regret to inform all of our Club Members and long time friends of the passing of one of our own, Ken Devine.  Ken had been a very active member of our Club, often involved in the planning and execution of our annual charity event.  In addition, he was very philanthropic with his financial support of The Club as well as with many local charities.  In addition, Ken offered substantial financial support to several Nepalese orphanages.

Even in spite of the quarantine, his daughter, Catherine, who lives in America was able to fly in and join the rest of his children and his partner, Margie.  We will miss him dearly.
