February burst in with a flurry of activity as the country came to better grips with the COVID pandemic and people understood what to do to keep safe.  Still an unpleasant disease to be living with.
A reminder of the top-notch speakers we had in February starting off with a technology session for all members by Phill, Bill and Paul – other members pitched in who had better knowledge than we did; for example, Pat Drummond and the portable audio system.  On the following Tuesday we went on a field trip with Lis Bastion to the sustainable horticultural and community garden she has created in Blackheath – what an amazing achievement.  Then on one evening we enjoyed a social meeting at the Katoomba RSL where all could relax and laugh in a conducive atmosphere.  Maurice Cooper OAM came on the 23rd Feb, who owns and operates Bygone Beauty’s and he spoke to us about businesses surviving in a pandemic by using the governments financial aid plus treating his staff with respect and making them feel part of the solution to recovery.
Improving news on the project to help homeless people in the upper mountains.  Some of the other Rotary Clubs in the Upper Mountains are willing to assist in fund raising, searching for suitable sites and general coordination.  The second Trivia night to raise funds for our homeless project had 57 participants and the three teams from Lower Blue scoop the podium (again) – well done.  This brought us over the $15,000 dollar mark in our RAWCS fund which meant that the Dick Smith Community matching grant is now available.  Watch this space.

Most of you reading this newsletter will know by now that longterm Rotarian, club member and friend Jim Greening OAM PHF passed away last week. His service to the wider community is legendary. We devote most of this newsletter to his achievements and memory. Our secondary story is about two community PHF recognitions our Club made to two wonderful people working in the disability sector.

So when this bulletin arrives in your inbox, please have a read and share it with your friends. We are all shedding a tear for Jim and supporting his wife Margaret.

Please join us at a meeting sometime soon.
Jim Greening

Vale Jim. Our wonderful friend in Rotary passed away on 13th November, 2020. Jim's passing is a sad loss to the world, not just as a committed Rotarian of over 45 years, but also as a great friend, a great man, and a great human being that spent his life committed to service above self. Jim demonstrated every single day of his life that he was truly a rarity and a true gentleman and leader. He started contributing to his community while at Homebush Boys High and went on to become an Apexian (including Club President, District Governor and Zone President). He joined the Rotary Club of Burwood in the mid-1970s and was one of the founders of Upper Blue Mountains Sunrise when they chartered in 2001, serving as President in 2007-08. Outside of Rotary Jim's community service included many years on the Western Sydney Hospital Board, including a term as Chairman. Jim was, by trade, a Master Plumber and businessman.

Our thoughts at this time are with Margaret, his loving wife of 47 years.

Our Club is so proud to call Jim a long-time friend and a true inspiration to his colleagues.  He engaged in numerous activities and projects – contributing to fun filled meetings, fundraising, community care projects, the list goes on and on ... from President to Santa Clause, Jim did it all.

The 2012 club changeover was an opportunity to celebrate Jim Greening’s 40 years’ service as a Rotarian and 60 years as a member of a service club and other voluntary organisations.  Then club President, John Curry and Past District Governor, Marilyn Mercer presented Jim with a double sapphire to add to his PHF recognitions.

Jim Greening has faithfully served his community for 60 years in a wide range of capacities.  His service has not just been through Rotary but prior to that through Apex and Lions, and also in a multitude of civic roles, primarily hospital boards of management.  He is a quiet achiever, always ready to lend a hand and never flaunts his achievements or awards.

He has made a strong leadership contribution through terms as president of his Rotary clubs, Apex club and zone, and Lions club; and through chairmanship of his many civic activities.  His service and leadership have been recognised with a Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship in 1988, life membership of Apex in 1969 and OAM in 1984.

Jim, we will all miss you.

Community PHF Awards
Last week our Club was proud to recognise two Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) awards to two very deserving people. We thank Rotarian John Rankins OAM for these nominations.
President Paul Campbell presenting PHF Awards to Susan Hatswell and Karen Frawley.

Firstly Susan Hatswell, Lifestyle Day Option Manager from Greystanes Disability Services has been quietly going about her work for many years designing and implementing lifestyle programmes for those with sometimes extreme disability. Her leadership, patience and compassion have helped so many deserving people in our community.

Secondly Karen Frawley, Project Manager, Blue Mountains Food Services. Karen has been with BMFS for 12 years and has been instrumental in setting up many departments and programmes within BMFS. Karen's dreams came true with the opening of the Ben Roberts Cafe and establishment of cooking classes for people with disabilities.

Fran O'Leary, former General Manager BMFS; Karen Frawley, Susan Hatswell; Robert Tinsey, CEO of Greystanes; Peter Poulos, Chairman Greystanes.
